Lewis arrives at Sasha Shangri-La

image

I am so happy to introduce Lewis,a 1968 denim boy with really nice, hand painted eyes. Lewis fits in nicely with the resident boys at Sasha Shangri-La.

Lewis came wearing his original sweater, denim pants, belt, sandals, and under pants. His outfit is in very good condition.

Lewis has his original tags. The red tag was placed on dolls that were imported to the USA and Sweden from mid to late 1968. Β The tag is made of plastic and ties with a ribbon. This is the first red tag I have had in my collection. Lewis also has his plain backed gold tag used from 1966-1968.

These photos show his eyes even closer for those that like to see the painting.

Another wonderful item came with dear Lewis—he has his original box :). This is the English production “First Box” made for Sasha dolls from 1966-1968. It is also the first early box that I have had in my collection. So I was thrilled that Lewis brought his box with him. Lewis was $15.75 in 1968.

Close-up photo of the wording on the back of the box. The wording “Now that it is possible to have a Sasha doll, produced in series,…” indicates that it is box I-B. I rely on the wonderful book “Sasha Dolls Serie Identification” by Susanna Lewis with Ann Chandler and Anne Votaw to identify not only the dolls but their clothing, boxes, tags, stringing, etc. What a great resource!

This photo allows you to see how the lid is designed with a see through front and that it fits over the bottom. The box bottom has sloping sides and a flat bottom that allow the doll to lay flat and to be secured. What a great design! This box measures 19.5 inches long by 10.5 inches wide and 3.75 inches in height. I plan to be very careful when storing this special box.

This final photo is of Lewis standing by his box and sending hugs to you today! xx. Thank you for visiting Sasha Shangri-La Β πŸ™‚

  1. That was truly educational, Ginger. I appreciate the photos and even the measurements as I have never seen the early box or red tag before. Fascinating. Lewis is an exceptional Denims boy; he has such warm, chocolate eyes. Congratulations on the new addition!

  2. What an incredible addition to your Sasha family Lewis is, like he came from the shop yesterday! He is really beautiful Ginger, I have a great fondness for Gregors and Lewis is a star.

  3. What a fabulous find and buy you have with Lewis!
He is really handsome and those eyes are ‘to die for.’ Those girls of yours will sure to be fighting over him!
I have only ever had one doll, a 1968 minty Frido Fringe girl, with the red export tag but have had three of the first boxes during my collecting years but hadn’t realised that there was slightly different wording on them (….. although I do have the book I haven’t read it yet!)
Wishing you and Lewis every happiness together.

  4. Thank you Kendal for the well wishes! The very first “First Box”, I-A, has the wording “…one of these unique dolls…” And box I-B changed that wording to say “…have a Sasha doll…” I thought I would read the book cover to cover since I love to read but have not done so. It is a wonderful reference book and I refer to it when needed and that has been quite a lot lately. πŸ™‚

  5. What a very handsome fellow this young man is Ginger! I love his whole look, he looks quite dreamy too, and rather aloof in some ways! I bet he has that lovely lovely new vinyl smell too, the smell that always brings back memories of wonderful Christmas mornings as a child, when we’d race downstairs to see if Santa had been and what he’d left us! Ahhhh!!!
    Big hugs Sharon xxx

    • Thank you Sharon! Yes, he does look a bit of aloof but I detected some vulnerability in his eyes which really pulled on my mother strings :). I remember that wonderful vinyl smell too–like it was yesterday!! Many happy Christmas mornings and how nice that we have have those memories πŸ™‚
